St. Barts has several ways people connect into the community. We are run by a group of five people (a "fractal") who are seeking to mitigate the struggles that people have in our precarious existence in this world.
The Community Supported Agriculture Cooperative is our group of families that organize to support a local farm grow delicious organic food. Each family gets two big bags of vegetables every week from June - November for about $500 a year.
Carpenter's Kids: For $50 a year and a 5 year commitment, families send one child orphaned by AIDS to school. Every penny goes directly to books, uniforms and a place to stay for the child.
Politics, Schmolitics: We get together to complain about politics. Sometimes on Election Tuesday we get together at church and cry into our beer, wine, or whatever.
The Shelter: Six times a year, we support the overflow group from Open Arms at Grace Church. We often need help with washing linens, making sandwiches.
The Soup Kitchen: Volunteers can help set up the dining room; cook a meal; serve the meal; or clean up. Some do all four. Every part is important. Setting up can include decorations, setting up linens, making the place comfortable. Cooking is for 60 people - and includes a protein, a vegetable, a starch and a dessert; and serving requires being around at 11:30pm; cleaning ensures our friends don't get sick.
